Muhammadiyah University Jakarta (UMJ) held an academic discussion with the theme The Power of Play: English For Young Learners. This event is a form of collaboration between UMJ and the Faculty of Education, Monash University Australia , which was held at the UMJ Faculty of Education (FIP) Auditorium , Thursday, (07/09/2023).

Lecture Faculty of Education Monash University, Anne Keary, Ph.D., as the keynote speaker explained that as many as 21% of Australians use different languages to communicate according to their surroundings. Australia consists of three distinct cultures. In his research, Keary explained how Australians teach communication to children, one of which is by playing.

Playing becomes a place for direct communication that is practiced in a fun atmosphere. Home and play communities are important spaces for children. This is because parents act as the child's first educators. Meanwhile, social interaction can form communication habits.

Furthermore, Keary said that is why young children can absorb many languages after being provided with language at home. However, language use in a family is not always the same, for example, the majority of families in Indonesia are Muslim, so children are taught from an early age how to read Arabic.

On the same occasion, the Dean of FIP UMJ, Prof. Dr. Iswan, M.Si., in his speech stated that with the increasing era of technology, learning must of course be further prepared for the future of students. "Hopefully this collaboration can become an opportunity for sharing in educating children for a better future. "I hope there will always be events that can have a positive impact on the two institutions in this collaboration," said Iswan.

Academic discussions are not the first activity that UMJ has held with Monash University. Since 2018, UMJ has collaborated with Monash University. This discussion was also attended by a number of UMJ academics, which ended with a question and answer session.
