Muhammadiyah's attitude in politics is independent-active. Muhammadiyah is not affiliated with any particular political party, in accordance with the mandate of the 1978 Surabaya Khittah. However, Muhammadiyah cadres must be proactive in political processes in Indonesia.
This was stated by the Chancellor of UMJ, Prof. Dr. Ma'mun Murod, S.sos., M.si, in a public discussion of the 'Aisyiyah Research and Development Institute (LPPA) Regional Leadership of Muhammadiyah (PWM) Special Capital Region (DKI) Jakarta, Monday (25/9/23).
The proactive involvement of cadres in the democratic party is not only interpreted as a matter of supporting candidates. But they also participated in helping the election run well.
Ma'mun emphasized that Muhammadiyah has a role in supporting dignified and democratic elections. Moreover, Muhammadiyah has a wide cadre network from Aceh-Papua, as well as in the context of higher education. Muhammadiyah can be a force in the process of monitoring and supervising elections.
Not only that, the Chancellor and Deputy Chair I of the Institute for Wisdom and Public Policy (LHKP) said that before the general election, many strategic political issues were emerging. He mapped out everything from the independence of election organizers, neutrality of survey institutions, expensive political costs, political polarization, puritanical politics, hoaxes, to identity politics.
Ma'mun also invited 'Asyiyah cadres to continue to be actively involved, so that women's involvement in politics becomes real.
